Bunker Hill Community College Veterans Center Hosts Speaker
BOSTON, May 5, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bunker Hill Community College's Veterans Center hosts a number of guest speakers addressing a range of topics relating to veterans' issues. On April 28, the Veterans Center hosted Marybeth A. O'Sullivan, R.N., B.S.N., U.S. Navy veteran and expert on veterans' transition matters, who spoke on: "Veterans: Understanding their Cognitive Challenges; Building Strategies for Successful College Transition." O'Sullivan reviewed health issues veterans may face returning to college, primarily Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Both PTSD and TBI can cause insomnia, impaired memory and poor concentration, all of which can make college studies difficult.
On October 27, 2011, the Veterans Center will host Dr. Kathy Snead, president of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC). SOC provides educational opportunities to servicemembers who, because they frequently moved from place to place, have had difficulty completing college degrees.
Bunker Hill Community College's Veterans Center opened in November 2010. Since 2008, the number of veterans at the College has tripled. Currently, 410 veterans are enrolled at the College, which is one of the highest veteran enrollments at any Massachusetts college or university.
