Bunker Hill Community College Students Win Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Awards
BOSTON, March 24, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bunker Hill Community College students Tung Doan and Sondos Alnamos have been honored by the international honor society Phi Theta Kappa (PTK). Doan was honored by PTK as a 2016 Coca-Cola New Century Scholar for having earned the top All-USA Community College Academic Team score in Massachusetts. Alnamos was named a 2016 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Bronze Scholar for having scored in the top 150 in the All-USA Community College Academic Team competition.
Doan, a biological sciences major at BHCC now studying microbiology and cell sciences at the University of Florida, will receive a $2,000 scholarship and will be recognized at the Annual Phi Theta Kappa President's Breakfast held during the American Association of Community College's Annual Convention on April 12, 2016, in Chicago, as well as at Phi Theta Kappa's Convention in National Harbor, Maryland on April 7-9, 2016. Alnamos, a biomedical engineering major, will receive a $1,000 scholarship and a bronze medallion, and her achievement will be recognized at Phi Theta Kappa's convention.
"This is the ninth time in 12 years, and the seventh consecutive year, that a BHCC student has received an All-USA Academic Team Scholarship, and the first time that both BHCC entrants received recognition," said Paul Moda, Coordinator of Student Activities at BHCC and Advisor to Alpha Kappa Mu (AKM), Bunker Hill Community College's chapter of PTK. "We are truly lucky to have such strong leadership and talent to celebrate."
Tung Doan, who is from Vietnam, received the Trustees' Service Award from BHCC in 2014. He was a member of the Commonwealth Honors Program, Asian Club Vice President and an Orientation Mentor. He also served as President of the SHOCWAVES Club, and Vice President of Academic Affairs on the Student Government Association. He was a member of AKM, BHCC's chapter of PTK, an ACE Mentor for the Office of Learning Communities, and a Community Service Leader for the Office of Community Engagement.
Alnamos, who is from Syria, serves as Student Trustee on BHCC's Board of Trustees. This year she received the Academic Excellence Award for Continuing Students. In 2015 she traveled to Venice, Italy, on a BHCC Study Abroad Scholarship. In 2015 she received the Outstanding Leadership Award from the SGA. She has also served as Vice President of Administration on the SGA and Co-President of AKM. The Start Smart Orientation Mentor was the student administrator of the Commonwealth Honors Program and the Student Advisor to the Arab Student Association.
The academic team program is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and is administered by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Phi Theta Kappa, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,285 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, U.S. territorial possessions and eight sovereign nations. More than three million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 134,000 students inducted annually.
