Bunker Hill Community College Students Win "Leaders of Promise" Scholarships
BOSTON, Oct. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bunker Hill Community College students Niamh Daly, Yamileth Lopez and Jody Roberts were named Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholars by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK). The students will receive scholarships of $1,000 to further their associate degree studies; they are also encouraged to assume leadership roles by participating in PTK programs.
The students were chosen based on their scholastic achievement, community service and leadership potential. Lopez, an accounting major, has served as Student Trustee on the Bunker Hill Community College Board of Trustees since May 2014. A member of the entrepreneurship club, she has served as an orientation mentor and peer mentor while maintaining a 3.66 GPA.
Roberts majors in management. She works as a grant manager at Massachusetts General Hospital. The caregiver and student advocate has maintained a 3.93 GPA. Daly, a general concentration major who will begin in the nursing program in January, has maintained a 4.0 GPA. She volunteers at Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital.
The Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program provides new PTK members with financial resources to help defray educational expenses and to develop leadership potential. The program awards $200,000 in scholarships annually; $25,000 is earmarked for members of the military or military veterans.
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,285 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States and throughout the world. More than 2.5 million students have been inducted since the organization's founding in 1918, with approximately 135,000 students inducted annually.
