BOSTON, March 4, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bunker Hill Community College student Elsa John has been chosen as Massachusetts New Century Scholar, BHCC President Mary L. Fifield announced this week. The New Century Scholars program honors the top-scoring student from each of the 50 states in the Coca-Cola All-State Community College Academic Team program.
As the top-scoring student from Massachusetts, John will receive a $2,000 scholarship and will be listed with other state winners in "USA Today" on April 11, 2011. The New Century Scholar program is sponsored annually by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), the Coca-Cola Foundation, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, and Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges. The AACC represents almost 1,200 two-year institutions of higher education nationwide and is the major professional association serving community colleges.
Elsa John, who is studying business at the College, is a founder and current co-president of the campus Sustainability Club. "Her approach to sustainability is people-centered," said Student Activities Coordinator Paul Moda. "Elsa teaches people to be self-sustainable as human beings. This is what makes her so effective as a leader," Moda said. "She is an outstanding student whose passion and sense of purpose positively impact everyone she comes into contact with," Moda added. John also serves as a Student Mentor and Cultural ambassador at the College, welcoming new students and helping facilitate campus discussion of sensitive issues such as race, culture and class.
John will be recognized at the AACC convention in New Orleans April 9-12. A student from Bunker Hill Community College has represented Massachusetts at the AACC convention for the past two years and four times in the last seven years.
