Bunker Hill Community College Partner a Finalist for MA Non-Profit Network Award

BOSTON, Dec. 14, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The partnership between Bunker Hill Community College and the Pathway Technology Campus (PTC) of Inquilinos Boricuas en Accion (IBA) offers a direct pathway into higher education and careers. The IBA was recently honored as a Finalist for the 2010 Massachusetts Non-Profit Network Excellence Awards in the collaboration category. The PTC is an educational and workforce development partnership with Bunker Hill Community College.

The Massachusetts Nonprofit Network is a unifying statewide association focusing on advocacy, capacity-building, and public awareness.  Finalists for this award were chosen by a panel of judges that included community, foundation and academic leaders from across the state.

Inquilinos Boricuas en Accion (IBA) was born from a resident-led social justice movement that developed Villa Victoria, a 435-unit affordable housing community in Boston's South End. PTC provides low-income residents of the South End/Lower Roxbury neighborhood with the opportunity to: complete their GED and take adult education classes; enroll in college-level classes; and receive academic support, case management, free child care services and academic advising needed to achieve economic self-sufficiency. During 2010, through the Hyams Foundation's Teen Futures Initiative, PTC expanded to Lower Roxbury with a new site at the YMCA's Central Branch that focuses on 16-24 year olds who have dropped out of school.

Bunker Hill Community College is the largest community college in Massachusetts. The College enrolls more than 12,000 students on two campuses and at four satellite locations. BHCC is one of the most diverse institutions of higher education in Massachusetts. Six in ten students are people of color and more than half of BHCC's students are women. The College also enrolls more than 700 international students who come from more than 90 countries and speak 75 different languages.
