Bunker Hill Community College Makes Presidential Honor Roll for Community Service
BOSTON, May 17, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- For the fifth consecutive year the Corporation for National and Community Service has named Bunker Hill Community College to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The Honor Roll recognizes exemplary service to America's communities.
Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a college can achieve for its commitment to service learning and civic engagement. Honorees for the project were chosen based on a series of factors including scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation and the extent of a college's inclusion of service learning in academic courses.
BHCC was recognized for three programs: 1) The Boston Welcome Back Center is a partnership with MassBay Community College, Roxbury Community College, the University of Massachusetts Boston, and the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education. The Center assists internationally educated nurses in obtaining licensure and employment in this country. 2) The Tech Prep Consortium is a partnership with the Boston Public Schools and other area school districts that aims at promoting career fields within Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The Tech Prep program at Bunker Hill Community College has worked with over 450 middle and high school students in the Metro Boston area. 3) CANstruction, a partnership with the Greater Boston Food Bank, is an annual event which brings together local architecture design firms for a "design and build" competition focused on promoting awareness of global hunger. The College has hosted and supported this competition since 2008.
