Bunker Hill Community College Is Lead Sponsor of Somerville Green Business Event

BOSTON, May 4, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bunker Hill Community College is the lead sponsor of the Somerville Chamber of Commerce's third annual B2Green Expo and Network event. The event will be held on Thursday, May 5th at the Holiday Inn on Washington St. from 4 p.m. to 7. p.m.

At the event, College staff and students from the Sustainability Club will offer a "What's Your Carbon Footprint?" learning activity, in which participants will take an ecological footprint quiz to determine the environmental impacts of individual lifestyles. The quiz is scored according to how many "planets" an individual's lifestyle requires. Students will also distribute a "Going Green" survey and display a composting bin they donated to the College.

Last year, the College opened a 48,000-square-foot Health & Wellness Center, which was recently awarded LEED Gold certification. This is the only building in the Commonwealth that has earned this level of certification under the new, more stringent Version 2.2 guidelines established by the United States Green Building Council. LEED certification sets the nationally accepted benchmarks for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. The Health & Wellness Center houses state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories supporting students majoring in nurse education and health professions, as well as the College's first gymnasium and a fitness center.

Bunker Hill Community College is the largest community college in Massachusetts. The College enrolls more than 12,600 students on two campuses and at four satellite locations. BHCC is one of the most diverse institutions of higher education in Massachusetts. Six in ten students are people of color and more than half of BHCC's students are women. The College also enrolls more than 700 international students who come from more than 90 countries and speak 75 different languages.
