Bunker Hill Community College Earns National Recognition for Service Work
BOSTON, Dec. 23, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bunker Hill Community College has won national recognition for its service to the community. BHCC was among the institutions named to the 2014 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for their volunteer and service work. This is the fifth year that BHCC has been named to the President's Honor Roll. In 2013 BHCC Community Engagement programs reached an estimated 4,000 students, who provided approximately 5,000 hours of service to the Greater Boston community.
The President's Honor Roll recognizes higher education institutions whose community service efforts achieve meaningful outcomes in their communities. This distinction is the highest federal recognition colleges and universities can receive for community service, service-learning and civic engagement. "The energy among student volunteers right now is very high on campus. It's exciting to see their enthusiasm—it's contagious!" said Meghan Callaghan, BHCC Coordinator of Community Engagement and Student Volunteerism. "Fortunately, more and more transfer schools are looking at these kinds of experiences on applications, so our students are being rewarded in multiple ways for their volunteering."
The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that engages more than five million Americans in service through AmeriCorps, SeniorCorps, the Social Innovation Fund and the Volunteer Generation Fund. Other partners include the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the U.S. Department of Education, the Campus Compact and the American Council on Education.
