Bunker Hill Community College Awarded Grant for STEM Scholarships
BOSTON, June 5, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) a three-year grant of $536,456 under a program titled "Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM)." BHCC will use the funds to start a student scholars program, "Rewarding Excellence For Leaders in Engineering, Computer Science, and Information Technology" (REFLECT).
The REFLECT program will provide scholarships for two years of study to approximately 65 students in the Engineering Transfer, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, and Information Technology programs, beginning in spring 2013. Students may use both years of scholarships at BHCC, or use one of the two years at a four-year program of the students' choice.
Additionally, all REFLECT scholars will be provided a laptop computer with the latest software and applications to support their coursework and projects. REFLECT students will also get leadership opportunities by participating in new models of peer support, including an on-line mentoring community led by scholarship recipients. Scholars will be encouraged to graduate and transfer from BHCC, and will receive support throughout the transfer process.
Bunker Hill Community College is the largest community college in Massachusetts. The College enrolls more than 13,600 students on two campuses and at four satellite locations. BHCC is one of the most diverse institutions of higher education in Massachusetts. Six in ten students are people of color and more than half of BHCC's students are women. The College also enrolls more than 830 international students who come from more than 90 countries and speak 75 different languages.
