STUART, Fla., Aug. 6, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Bullsugar.org announces endorsements and voter guides for the 2018 primary election cycle in Florida. The information is available on its website at www.bullsugar.org/vote
Bullsugar's candidate questionnaire focuses unprecedented public attention on Big Sugar money in Florida politics and its relation to the toxic algae bloom threatening the economy, the environment, and public health.
For the first time, a strong majority of candidates to be the next governor of Florida have taken a principled position opposing Big Sugar's influence on the state's water management infrastructure.
In the Republican primary, Bullsugar favors Congressman Ron DeSantis for governor. DeSantis has refused Big Sugar money and denounced the industry's subsidies and domination of water resources as corporate welfare. His opponent, Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, has received millions from industry giants US Sugar and Florida Crystals, supports the sugar subsidies and has championed legislation that has directly led to increased water pollution, especially in Lake Okeechobee.
Chris Maroney, a founder of Bullsugar, said, "The principled conservative position is not to pick winners and losers, but in so many ways that is what government does by putting subsidies for Big Sugar ahead of every other consideration. The big loser is our tourist-based economy."
In the Democratic gubernatorial primary, Bullsugar.org endorses Chris King. From the outset, King has spoken out against the corrupting influence of sugar industry money on elections, and regarding toxic cyanobacteria blooms on Lake Okeechobee and the practice of sugarcane burning, has called for prioritizing the health and safety of Floridians ahead of sugarcane crop yields. His political courage has shifted the discourse of the 2018 primary elections. Notably, all five Democratic candidates to be governor completed Bullsugar's questionnaire, signed the Now or Neverglades declaration and agreed not to accept Big Sugar money during their campaigns
