Building A GradNation Summit To Be Held April 27-29 In Washington, DC

WHAT:
America's Promise Alliance, will host the 2014 Building a GradNation Summit. The annual event brings together more than 900 leaders in education, politics, business, and nonprofits with youth and community leaders from across the country to discuss progress and challenges in raising graduation rates. This year's Summit will include the release of the 2014 Building a GradNation Report, which will include the latest national and state graduation rates and what's behind the numbers. Conference offerings will include national experts addressing the many aspects of positive youth development that aid in increasing high school graduation rates.
Daily Summit Highlights include:
- Monday, April 28: Opening remarks by America's Promise Chair Mrs. Alma Powell. Release of the 2014 Building a GradNation report, the highly anticipated annual update on the nation's high school graduation rate, what's behind the numbers, and what must be done to continue improving them. Remarks from Education Secretary Arne Duncan. Sessions on more detailed results from the report, chronic absenteeism, and middle schools. General session with Founder of Turnaround for Children Dr. Pam Cantor about low-performing, high-poverty schools.
- Tuesday, April 29: Remarks about the importance of restoring opportunity and mobility for young people by U.S. Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey, including understanding the real challenges they face. Sessions on teaching STEM, listening to youth voices, community service, and engaging youth in careers. Closing general session with America's Promise Founding Chairman retired Gen. Colin Powell, Mrs. Powell and Ford Foundation President Darren Walker.
