Budding Artists To Display Creativity
Innovative Exhibition Returns to Redford Library
DETROIT, April 15, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Development Centers, a recognized leader in the field of behavioral health, has been providing comprehensive wellness programming and related services to the residents of northwest Detroit and neighboring communities for over thirty years.
One of their most recent innovations has been the development of a series of artist led workshops that provide participants with hands-on experiences specially designed to bring out their inner creativity and artistic expression.
Returning to the Redford Township District Library, Development Centers announces their 3rd Annual 'Wellness Through Art' Exhibition will present a public showing of this year's creations.
Participants now look forward to displaying and celebrating their artistic achievements with the community on Monday, April 28th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Food and entertainment will be provided as well as the chance to hear first-hand, from all the presenters, what they enjoyed most about their experience.
'Wellness Through Art'
WHAT: Wellness Through Art is both a celebration as well as a unique exhibition.
It features the efforts and talents of previously untrained youths and adults …many who are learning for the first time … imaginative ways of tapping into the creative nature of their inner-being for self expression.
This year's assembly of poetry readings and over 100 pieces of art on display is the culmination of an annual joint-collaboration project between Master Degree candidates from the University of Michigan School of Social Work (www.ssw.umich.edu) and behavioral health specialists from northwest Detroit's Development Centers (www.develctrs.org).
WHY: The Wellness Through Art initiative is offered each Spring to Development Centers clients as an inventive way for them to learn how to freely express themselves and connect with other people.
HOW: Over the past two months, participants in the project have attended a series of lively workshops especially designed to encourage each individual to confidently explore opportunities for artistic expression, socialization and community engagement.
WHO: The learning sessions were facilitated by several prominent local Detroit artists including: craft specialist Victoria Banks; muralist Chazz Miller; former professor of fine art Lester Johnson; as well as poetess Natasha "Beautiful Thought" Ane'e.
This year's crop of enthusiastic artisans now look forward to displaying and celebrating their artistic achievements with the public.
Christopher Turner, a U of M intern with Development Centers, who served as a co-chair for the initiative observed: "The Art Workshops were a great success this year! It was such an amazing undertaking watching each participant share their experience, passion, and hidden talents through artwork and poetry. Everyone involved is excited now to help show the rest of the community the many stories and pictures that were created for the Wellness Through Art exhibit."
This innovative arrangement has not only proven to be a highly successful therapy, the enormous popularity of the unique work produced for past public viewings makes this year's 3rd annual exhibition an inspirational 'must-see' event.
WHERE: The Redford Township District Library will be serving as host for this year's unveiling.
