Bruegger's Bagels Names 'Best Bagel Baker'

DALLAS, June 9, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Bruegger's Bagels, known for its freshly baked, authentic New York-style bagels, signature egg sandwiches and coffees, honored the company's best bagel artisan and other top performers at its annual conference in Pittsburgh last month.

In the company's first Ultimate Bagel Bake-Off, David Crichton of Raleigh, North Carolina, kettle-boiled and baked 12 bagel varieties to perfection to claim the top prize, which included $2,000 cash, a trophy and a starring role in upcoming Bruegger's Bagels training videos. Crichton, who surpassed bagel artisans from more than 275 other bakeries nationwide, has been with the company for 15 years and currently works at the Bruegger's Bagels in the Stonehenge area of Raleigh.

"With so much talent in our bakeries, we knew our first Ultimate Bagel Bake-Off would be an exciting competition showcasing our authentic, traditional methods," said Bruegger's Bagels President Paul Carolan. "From our bagel artisans to our managers and franchisees, having excellent employees and partners is a key ingredient for our success."

The three-day conference concluded with an awards ceremony in which more than 200 awards were given to top performers. Highlights include:

• Franchisee of the Year: Tucson Bagel Company LLC, owned by Shawn Carter of Tucson, Arizona (franchisee since 1995)
• Overall General Manager of the Year: Karolyn Kane of Royal Oak, Michigan (employee since 1999)
• Overall District Manager of the Year: Nina Lemke of Michigan (employee since 2007)
• Operator of the Year: Marcia Maia, Director of Operations for Massachusetts, Vermont and Connecticut. (employee since 2007)

The conference also included keynote addresses by author and speaker Stephen Covey Jr., author and former commander of the USS Benfold Captain D. Michael Abrashoff, and author Jim Sullivan. Attendees also assembled and donated 36 bicycles to the Sarah Heinz House, a charter member of Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
