Bruegger's Bagels Joins Effort to End Childhood Hunger in America
Facebook campaign and coupon sales to benefit Share Our Strength's Dine Out For No Kid Hungry
BURLINGTON, Vt., Aug. 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- One in five children in America can't count on getting enough to eat each day, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. To do their part, Bruegger's Bagels will kick off a fundraising campaign on September 4 to support Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry campaign, joining thousands of restaurants nationwide in the fight to end childhood hunger in America.
Bruegger's will raise money through its Facebook page and in the company's 300-plus bakeries across the U.S. On Facebook, people can simply "Like" Bruegger's and the bagel leader will donate $1 to Dine Out For No Kid Hungry.
In the bakeries, guests can purchase coupon books for $3, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the campaign. Each $3 purchase helps provide a child with up to 30 nutritious meals, and guests can use the coupons, worth more than $20 in approximate value-- including free bagels, soups or sandwiches (some with purchase)--throughout the year.
"Hunger is such a problem in our country, but it has a solution," said Jim Vinz, co-CEO of Le Duff America, Bruegger's parent company, and chairman of the Dine Out For No Kid Hungry Advisory Board. "We have enough food in this country and know that if we work together we can connect kids - through donations, awareness, education, and improved access - to the nutritious meals they need to lead happy, healthy lives."
Bruegger's has set an aggressive goal for its fundraising efforts this year. The brand hopes to quadruple its donation from $25,000 in 2011 to $100,000 in 2012, to help No Kid Hungry raise awareness, support school breakfast, summer and after-school meal programs, and educate kids and their families on how to cook healthy, inexpensive meals. The campaign ends Sept. 22.
"Everyone - private citizens, businesses, policymakers, and nonprofits - has a role in helping end childhood hunger in America," said Share Our Strength founder and CEO Billy Shore. "I encourage everyone to dine out often at participating restaurants wherever they are this September. Then visit NoKidHungry.org to join this national movement to ensure that every child in America has access to the nutritious food they need, every day."
