After several years of relative quiet on the brown-bagging front [since the attempt of Medicare with the Competitive Acquisition Program (CAP)], Mandatory Vendor Imposition (MVI), also referred to as brown-bagging, is making its way back to the marketplace. Brown-bagging creates arrangements in which physicians would no longer be permitted to acquire, store, or manage the drugs they provide to their patients. Instead, third-party specialty pharmacies would manage patients' therapies from physicians' offices, removing physicians' ability to control the safety, efficiency and quality measures of patient therapies. This renewed attempt to remove oncologists from the management of cancer care is symptomatic of the intensifying pressures between physicians and payers over the increasing cost of helping patients fight cancer.
Join Roy Beveridge, M.D., medical oncologist and medical director with US Oncology; Michael Kolodziej, M.D., medical director, US Oncology and medical oncologist with New York Oncology Hematology, an affiliate of the United Network of US Oncology; and Matt Brow, vice president, Government Relations & Public Policy for US Oncology as they provide an overview of the risks associated with brown-bagging in the oncology practice and explore proactive approaches for oncologists to align incentives with payers through a physician-directed and physician-centric win-win model. An open discussion will follow the presentation.
