Brooklyn plumbing experts advise homeowners on indoor flood prevention
Petri Plumbing & Heating gives New Yorkers sump pump tips for statewide Flood Safety Preparedness Week March 8-14
BROOKLYN, N.Y., March 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Petri Plumbing & Heating, Inc., a family-owned home service company that has served Brooklyn and Manhattan for over a century, has tips on proper sump pump use and maintenance for property owners in time for New York Flood Safety Preparedness Week March 8-14.
"The next few months are the wettest time of year in New York," said Michael Patri, owner of Petri Plumbing & Heating. "We can see heavy rainfall during late winter and early spring, which increases the risk of indoor flooding. It's important to think ahead and prevent problems rather than desperately seeking solutions during stressful situations. Being prepared could save you from paying exorbitant costs to fix considerable damage when indoor floods occur."
To prevent indoor flooding, Petri suggests homeowners and property managers invest in a sump pump and keep the following advice in mind:
- Check on your check valve: Properly installed check valves have an arrow that should be pointing away from the sump pump. When check valves aren't installed correctly, problems will eventually occur.
- Inspect the discharge line: The sump pump discharge line must extend far enough away from the building to safely drain the foundation of water, and you should make sure it's not being obstructed by other objects and disrupting the flow of water.
- Examine the motor: You can check your sump pump motor by simply lifting its cover and pulling the float up. If this doesn't start the motor, it means it's not getting enough power or may not even be plugged in.
- Prepare backup power: Severe inclement weather can cut the power to your building. Because sump pumps rely on electricity, it's crucial you have a backup power source like a portable generator for such emergencies.
- Test the sump pump: A simple way to evaluate the equipment before an emergency is to pour a bucket of water directly into the pit that contains the pump. If the system is functioning properly, the water should drain with no problems.
If your sump pump shows any signs of malfunction, consult a professional plumbing expert for an inspection. Petri emphasizes that sump pumps are one of the most efficient methods for preventing water damage, but they require regular maintenance and upkeep to remain effective.
"People tend to underestimate the devastating impact of indoor floods," Petri said. "A mere few inches of water can result in costly, extensive damage. Professional inspection prevents homeowners from being vulnerable during emergencies and ensures they're prepared for the worst."
