An article published by About.com on May 20th, provides tips on preventing dry skin in infants and children during the dry summer months. Children often get dry skin during the summer after sweating from outdoor play, and swimming in chlorine and salt water which can dry out the skin as well. Without treatment, dry skin can be uncomfortable for infants and children.
The article provides information and several tips for parents to ensure that their children have hydrated skin throughout the summer. Some tips to prevent dry skin include: using a mild, moisturizing soap, showering after swimming in salt or chlorinated water, and moisturizing daily. Tips to treat dry skin include: using a moisturizer lotion or ointment, apply hydrocortisone, and contacting a pediatrician if condition persists.
Dr. Michael Gabriel of GPM Pediatrics says that this is all great advice and parents should be aware of their children's' skin irritations during the warm summer. "Prolonged swimming in salt water and chlorine can irritate the skin, especially for young children. Parents should monitor the amount of time children spend in the water at the pool or beach and moisturize thoroughly after showering." Gabriel suggests moisturizing daily anyway as the skin needs to stay hydrated.
"Parents have to remember that young children have very sensitive skin. It is more susceptible to sunburn, dry skin, and irritation than adults." Gabriel explains that skin needs to stay hydrated just as much as the rest of the body." Drinking water is also good for the skin; it needs to stay hydrated and moisturized otherwise it will be uncomfortable for both children and adults. I recommend using a moisturizer daily and if skin irritation persists, contact your local pediatrician."
