According to the article published by eMissourian.com on May 23rd, "The old recommendation on how much sunscreen to apply was to use as much as would fill a shot glass to cover your whole body. The new recommendation is to apply a 'thick' coat and do it twice — one before you head outdoors and a second when you get to where you are going." Adding two coats of sunscreen ensures that the proper protection is being applied.
Children are especially vulnerable to sunburn, sun poisoning and skin irritations. Melanoma, a form of skin cancer, is becoming more common in young adults aged 25-29 often due to sunburn at a young age. The article provides recommendations of reapplying sunscreen, wearing clothing that protects or covers the skin and sensitive areas, and that a thick coat of sunscreen is ideal every time it is applied.
Brooklyn pediatrician Michael Gabriel suggests that parents apply sunscreen liberally to children and that too much is better than too little. "Be aware of swimming with sunscreen on as well. Many times waterproof sunscreen claims to be water resistant, but can easily wash off after a couple minutes of swimming." Gabriel explains, "Always reapply sunscreen after swimming and sweating. The risks associated with sunburn at a young age are too great to not adhere to these new guidelines."
Dr. Gabriel urges parents to apply sunscreen anytime their child steps outdoors. "Sunscreen shouldn't only be applied when heading to the pool or beach. Any outdoor activity, even during the spring and fall can cause sun damage to sensitive skin. Children need to be protected from the sun at all times as it can lead to a deadly disease in the future." Dr. Gabriel urges parents to speak with their children about the risks of sunburns and the danger of tanning beds as well.
