Brooklyn Company Suggests Early Home Winterization to Avoid Untimely Disasters
Petri Plumbing and Heating, Inc. recommends New York homeowners prepare homes for winter early to avoid common seasonal equipment failures and to lower heating costs
BROOKLYN, N.Y., Nov. 19, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Petri Plumbing and Heating, Inc., a family owned business serving New York since 1906, recommends that New York homeowners winterize their homes early to avoid common home equipment failures and to lower heating costs during the colder months.
"The last thing you want as a homeowner is to have an unexpected home-related cost during the holiday season," said Michael Petri, owner of Petri Plumbing & Heating. "High energy bills and surprise equipment repairs are never pleasant, but luckily there are steps you can take to prepare your home for winter so you can avoid some of these common issues."
The Petri Plumbing and Heating team recommends the following for home winterization:
- Schedule a boiler tune-up – It's not too late to get an annual boiler tune-up. A boiler tune-up is important to prevent untimely equipment breakdowns, identify potential safety concerns, and improve air quality. Proof of annual maintenance is often required by the manufacturer for warranty work and reimbursements, and failure to maintain a regular service schedule may void the warranty. It is estimated that up to 40 percent of boilers that fail during winter will break down on the first day below freezing, but preventative maintenance can help decrease the chances of failure.
- Seal windows and doors – Up to a third of the average home's heat loss occurs through windows and doors. This can cost you more money in energy bills. There are simple ways to seal your windows and doors for the winter months such as: maintaining caulking and weather stripping, properly adjusting door thresholds, installing window films, and using draperies.
- Prepare outdoor faucets and spigots – Turning off your valves and draining the water can help prevent your pipes from freezing. For homes that do not have indoor valve control, products such as frost-free hose bibs and outdoor faucet covers can help.
- Insulate your pipes – Protecting your plumbing before the temperature drops can save you on a costly winter plumbing mishap. It's important to begin protecting your pipes from freezing before the onset of cold weather. Consider installing protective insulation products such as pipe sleeves or heat tape.
