BRENTWOOD, Tenn., March 26, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Seventeen Brookdale skilled nursing communities have received the highest possible overall rating of five stars from U.S. News & World Report in the magazine's sixth annual Best Nursing Homes review. U.S. News awarded the "Best Nursing Home" designation to communities that received the highest rating in January 2014 from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which sets and enforces federal requirements and standards for nursing homes certified to receive Medicare and Medicaid payments. The ratings are based on a community's performance in health inspections, nurse staffing, medical care and quality.
"We are pleased to have so many Brookdale communities among the highest rated in the senior living industry and this is a direct reflection of the daily efforts of associates who are committed to providing quality care to our residents," said Rita Vann, Senior Vice President of Healthcare Services. "Excellence is part of our mission and something we strive for daily as we enrich the lives of those we are fortunate to serve. We take ownership and pride in everything we do at Brookdale, and results like these show that our associates are passionate about serving our residents."

Nearly 16,000 nursing homes in 100 major metropolitan areas can be searched on the U.S. News website for individual ratings. About 25 percent of all nursing homes received five stars overall. Of Brookdale's 45 CMS certified skilled nursing communities, the average overall rating is 4.1. The overall numbers are based on the number of stars given in three categories: state conducted health inspections, amount of time nurses spend with residents and quality of medical care.
Ratings are based on how few deficiencies are reported during state health inspections conducted every 12 to 15 months. To receive five stars in the nursing category, staff had to provide nearly 4 ½ hours of care each day to residents. Quality of medical care is rated based on data collected on each resident and the medical care they receive.
