Bringing home the bacon in Las Vegas! 2014 Bacon World Champion is named
Defending champion Ricardo Heredia takes home $10,000 for the category championship
LAS VEGAS, Nov. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Bringing home the bacon, Ricardo Heredia of San Diego was named the Bacon World Champion in Las Vegas in mid-November at the World Food Championships (WFC). Defending his title, Heredia has now claimed the category championship two years in a row, winning over $120,000. The World Food Championships took place in Downtown Las Vegas, Nov. 12-18.
The Bacon World Championship, presented by Wright® Brand Bacon, welcomed nearly 50 world-class competitors to the playing field. Each competitor in this tournament-style competition turned in at least two bacon-themed recipes and competitors who advanced to the Top 10 round submitted an additional bacon-themed recipe, with the infusion of corn or cornmeal.
"Heredia takes cooking to the next level by utilizing scientific components to elevate his dishes," said Mike McCloud, president of the World Food Championships. "He has now proven to the world not once, but twice, that he is king over the bacon world."
Additionally, Heredia went on to win the overall competition, claiming the title of 2014 World Food Champion and taking home the $100,000 grand prize. Heredia's Final Table dish, "Bacon Tamal with Salsa Verde," was inspired by Tijuana street food.
Only in Las Vegas can food, fame and fortune be combined into one jackpot event. The 2014 World Food Championships features 400 of the world's best cooks and chefs, putting "joes" and "pros" on an equal playing field to battle it out for hundreds of thousands of dollars and the coveted title of the World Food Champion. Following a tournament-style format across nine iconic food categories — BBQ, chili, burger, sandwich, recipe, dessert, bacon, pasta and seafood — competitors will battle for their chance to claim the World Food Champion title.
