MILWAUKEE, July 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Briggs & Stratton Corporation is sharing some helpful blade-related tips for outdoor power equipment owners, in order to keep their lawns looking sharp throughout the season.
During a cutting season, your mower can experience a lot of wear and tear. While engine maintenance is crucial to mower longevity, mower blade maintenance can ensure your mower is cutting to the best of its ability.
Why Replace: Dull mower blades can rip or tear the grass, leaving it ragged and disease-prone. Replacing or sharpening the mower blade will ensure a clean cut every time.
When To Replace: If you notice you have uneven cutting or torn grass blades, it is time to replace your mower blade. You also can inspect the blade itself, looking for cracks or ragged edges. Replace your blade when it has been worn down and is paper thin, when you have a bent blade, or if there are dents in the cutting edge.
How To Replace: Your equipment owner's manual will provide the detailed steps for mower blade replacement or sharpening. Prior to performing any blade-related maintenance activities, ensure the spark plug wire is disconnected, remove battery pack or key if equipped, ensure fuel tank is empty if the mower will be tipped, and use gloves or cloth when handling to protect your hands from sharp edges.
Once your mower blade is sharpened or replaced, you can get to work on creating a professional-looking lawn. Remember; never cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade during your cutting sessions, and avoid mowing when grass is under heat stress.
