Breaking New Ground with Globally-Recognized Education in Manhattan
New private school BASIS Independent Manhattan ushers in the highly-regarded BASIS Curriculum to the Upper West Side
NEW YORK, Sept. 11, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- A ceremonial ribbon-cutting for the opening of BASIS Independent Manhattan, the newest private school from the acclaimed BASIS Curriculum Schools network, is set for Saturday, September 16, 2017 on the Upper West Side campus.
BASIS Independent Manhattan opened to 150 students in grades K-6 on September 5th. The campus will expand by one grade level in 2018-19, and one more in 2019-20, to ultimately serve K-8 students.
"There's nothing like the start of a new academic year for a community of educators – and it's no different for the passionate people at BASIS Independent Manhattan," said Head of School Jesse Rizzo. "In front of new families and teachers, it'll be nice to take a moment to reflect on the success of actualizing this new school, sowing the seeds of our new community, and looking forward to the places we will take our current and future students."
The ribbon cutting is at 9:45 a.m. on campus at 795 Columbus Avenue, prior to a gathering of students, teachers, and families for an annual pre-autumn carnival. Michael and Olga Block, the founders of the BASIS Curriculum and the network of BASIS Curriculum Schools, will take part in the celebration.
"We are quite proud to open another school in New York," said BASIS Independent CEO Dr. Ian Block. "Our Brooklyn school has been a remarkable success and we're excited to bring that proven academic program to students in Manhattan. We look forward to a vibrant year with our inaugural families."
BASIS Independent Manhattan will use the identical elementary and middle school academic program as BASIS Independent Brooklyn, which has been lauded for offering Mandarin and engineering classes from kindergarten; for its hands-on, project-based "Connections" class linking the arts, science, math, and humanities; and for its vibrant array of fine, visual, and performing arts and music coursework.
The 31 charter, independent, and international schools in the BASIS Curriculum Schools network are highly-regarded for excellence by any measure – national rankings, Advanced Placement results, OECD/PISA testing, and college admissions, among others. The network currently boasts five of the top ten schools in the nation per U.S. News & World Report's 2017 high school rankings, and seven schools atop the nation in 2017 on The Washington Post's two high school rankings lists.
