Bread for the World Urges Voters to Hold the President Accountable for His Election Promise to Work Toward Ending Hunger
WASHINGTON, Nov. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bread for the World is calling on President Barack Obama to end hunger and work with Congress to assure a place at the table for hungry and poor people.
"We can end hunger, and President Obama must make it happen," said Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World. "During his second term, we expect President Obama to set a goal and work with Congress to end hunger while ensuring that we do not balance the federal budget on the backs of hungry and poor people."
For more than two years, Christian leaders have come together to advocate for a circle of protection around funding for programs that are vital to hungry and poor people. In September, those leaders asked both presidential candidates to share their positions on hunger and poverty.
In his video statement President Obama said, "Last year, in the midst a heated budget debate in Washington, I promised to protect vital assistance for the least of these. I've kept that promise. We can pay down our debt in a balanced and responsible way, but we cannot balance the budget on the backs of the most vulnerable. And certainly can't ask the poor, the sick, or those with disabilities to sacrifice even more, or ask the middle-class to pay more, just so we can offer massive new tax cuts to those who've been blessed with the most."
The current challenge for both parties is the impending "fiscal cliff" on Dec. 31, 2012. It will result in across-the-board spending cuts and the end of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts.
"We are encouraged by House Speaker Boehner and President Obama's recent call for bipartisan cooperation to find an equitable solution to balancing the budget and averting the fiscal cliff," said Beckmann. "But Congress and President Obama must do so in a responsible manner that addresses our deficits and strengthens the circle of protection around programs that are vital to hungry and poor people."
