Bread for the World Applauds New International Commitment to Fight Global Hunger
WASHINGTON, April 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bread for the World President Rev. David Beckmann applauded the creation of the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program launched today by U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.
The United States will contribute $475 million to this multi-donor trust fund, which will be administered by the World Bank. The fund aims to reduce global hunger and poverty by increasing agricultural productivity and providing assistance to poor farmers and food producers.
"The Obama administration is to be commended for leading global efforts to invest in rural development and improve the lives of poor farmers," said Rev. Beckman. "This initiative shows that eradicating poverty requires a worldwide commitment. It is a step in the right direction to help the 1 billion people who suffer from hunger."
The fund was proposed last year by leaders of the G-8 countries who committed to doing more to support food security in poor countries. As of today, Canada has contributed $230 million, Spain $95 million, South Korea will contribute $50 million, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will donate $30 million.
"This effort represents a comprehensive approach to addressing food insecurity that includes agriculture and rural economic development," said Rev. Beckmann. "It also focuses on malnutrition, humanitarian assistance, and social safety net programming. This is a great beginning."
Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation's decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad.
