WASHINGTON, Jan. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- This evening, President Obama will deliver the annual State of the Union address. Bread for the World experts are available to comment and provide analysis on the president's remarks and the impact they will have on struggling families nationwide.
WHO: David Beckmann, president (Spanish and English)
Amelia Kegan, senior policy analyst
Christine Melendez Ashley, policy analyst
Dulce Gamboa, church relations associate (Spanish and English)
Asma Lateef, director, 2014 Hunger Report (English)
WHAT: Experts available to discuss President Obama's State of the Union Address.
WHEN: Following the address, Tuesday, January 28, 2014.
DETAILS: President Obama's address is said to focus on the growing income inequality and shrinking economic mobility in this country.
Consistent with Bread for the World Institute's 2014 Hunger Report, it is believed that the president will reiterate his focus for the next three years on raising the minimum wage as a vehicle for restoring economic mobility and increasing economic security for every American.
The State of the Union address comes at a critical time when 10.4 million people are unemployed. Congress has failed to extend emergency unemployment benefits, leaving 1.6 million unemployed workers cut off from assistance.
"It is a shame that Congress has failed to extend emergency unemployment aid at a time when so many families continue to struggle in this economy. The need hasn't stalled so neither should Congress' resolve to extend these benefits immediately," said Rev. David Beckmann. "We are counting on the president to urgently push Congress to extend unemployment insurance, raise the minimum wage, and oppose cuts to anti-hunger programs. Cuts to these programs are like robbing Peter to pay Paul."
