BURLINGTON, Mass., Feb. 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Decision Resources Group finds that the markets for gynecological devices in Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) will nearly double by 2022, driven largely by increasing awareness of and access to women's health procedures. Expanding economies in the BRIC countries have allowed for significant development of healthcare infrastructure, including the building of new facilities, purchasing of more diagnostic and surgical equipment and the training of more medical personnel, all of which will support procedure volumes.
Despite growing investment in healthcare, cost constraints will continue to affect purchasing decisions in the BRIC markets. For example, facilities in these countries show a preference for rigid hysteroscopes because these devices carry a low cost and can be used for both diagnostic and operative procedures; this makes them more attractive than more expensive flexible hysteroscopes, which can only be used for diagnostic applications.
Cost concerns have also limited the use of fluid management systems. Fluid management devices are virtually nonexistent in China and India due to the high cost of capital equipment and a lack of physician training. In Brazil and Russia, where fluid management systems are more prevalent, reusable tubing is popular as a means of lowering the cost per procedure.
"Cost consciousness continues to define the BRIC markets, but there are a few segments where there is some potential for adoption of premium-priced technologies," said Decision Resources Group Analyst Yulia Privolnev. "If competitors are able to clinically prove that their products reduce hospital stays, decrease the risk of complications and improve convenience and ease-of-use, they may be able to convince surgeons and facilities to adopt premium devices. For example, insurance companies in Brazil are beginning to favor reimbursing disposable tubing because it is associated with a lowered risk of disease transmission, which will ultimately spur greater uptake of these higher-priced devices through 2022."
Decision Resources Group's BRIC Markets for Gynecological Devices 2014 report includes procedure information for female sterilization, as well as unit, average selling price and revenue information, along with market drivers and limiters and a competitive landscape for global endometrial ablation devices, uterine fibroid embolization devices, endometrial resection devices, hysteroscopes and fluid management devices in Brazil, Russia, India and China.
