TORONTO, March 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Decision Resources Group finds that markets for laparoscopic devices in Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) will see rapid growth as rising per capital incomes and favorable demographic trends result in the increasing adoption of laparoscopy, which offers faster recovery, better cosmetic results and less postoperative pain compared to open techniques.
"Laparoscopic penetration into general surgical procedures has been particularly high in China," said Decision Resources Group Analyst Manya Aggarwal. "Rapidly rising incomes and increasing insurance reimbursement in both urban and rural areas have given more people access to new minimally invasive surgical techniques. The government has also substantially increased the level of investment in its healthcare system, allowing for greater funding for lower tier and rural hospitals, as well as more training opportunities for surgeons. While previously most procedures were performed in coastal regions and major urban centers such as Shanghai and Beijing, inland and southern Chinese provinces will see the strongest procedure volume growth through 2022 as a result of this increase in funding."
Procedure volume expansion will also be supported as a result of a rise in medical tourism in India and Brazil. Rising health care costs in developed countries coupled with the availability of high-quality, low-cost medical facilities in India and Brazil have led to rapid growth in medical tourism, especially for elective procedures such as bariatric surgeries.
In addition, BRIC countries stand to benefit significantly from greater adoption of robotic technology in gynecological and urological procedures, as has occurred in the United States. Robotic-assisted surgery allows surgeons to have better control, precision and dexterity in complex cases than is possible with other approaches. However, due to financial constraints, this technology is still in its infancy in BRIC countries.
Decision Resources Group's BRIC Markets for Laparoscopic Devices 2014 and Chinese Markets for Laparoscopic Devices 2014 reports include unit, procedure, average selling price and revenue information, along with market drivers and limiters and a competitive landscape for access devices, advanced direct energy devices and internal closure devices in Brazil, Russia, India and China.
