The Smart Energy Demand Coalition held a speaker event in Brussels entitled "How to ensure demand side programme success in Europe" At this launch event, SEDC released the results of the new SEDC white paper and discussed what is required to make Demand Side Programs succeed in Europe, as well as the cutting-edge policy measures that the group has joined together to support.
"The success of the smart grid is greatly dependent on the ability to make energy demand 'smart'. I'm confident that the wide scope of experience of the different members of the SEDC gives us the potential to intelligently promote demand side programs in Europe that will make a difference in the future energy balance," said Pascal Julienne, Executive Director of BPL Global EMEA, Member of the board of SEDC.
The Smart Grid is widely seen in Europe as a means to reach the 2020 energy objectives, which the SEDC supports: 20% lower energy consumption, 20% lower CO2 emissions and 20% use of renewable energy resources. Cooperation between electric utilities and their customers, acting as equal partners in an energy eco-system, forms the basis for the intelligence in the smart grid. Smart grids cannot succeed without the successful participation of Demand Side Programs and European Consumers.
"The Smart Energy Demand Coalition can be an important catalyst for demand side programs by mobilizing support from utilities, regulators and consumers," said Pete Londa, CEO of BPL Global. "Demand side programs are vital to the smart grid transformation. Smart grid solutions from BPLG that allow utilities to integrate management of demand side resources including customer load energy storage and renewables meet a global need to more effectively manage energy."
SEDC members include BPL Global, Capgemini, Cinterion, Delta, Digi International, DRSG, EDF, Electricity North West UK, Elektro Ljubljana, eMeter, Enel, Enernoc, Entelios, E.ON, ESMIG, Instituto Tecnolgico de la Energia, Johnson Controls Inc, Jouleassets, Landis+Gyr, NOERR, Orange, PLMA, Prolan, Poyry, Schneider Electric, Siemens, Silver Spring Networks, Smart Power Grid Poland, Sustainability First, The Climate Group, The European Demand Response Research Center, United Technologies Research Center Ireland, VaasaETT, Vodafone and ZigBee Alliance.
