BALTIMORE, July 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Fresh off a consensus national title in boys' lacrosse, The Boys' Latin School of Maryland is replacing their two athletic fields beginning in late June. Both the J. Duncan Smith '73 Field and Lebrun's Coaches Field will receive state-of-the-art playing surfaces from AstroTurf®, the originator of the synthetic turf industry.

The two playing fields will be re-covered with AstroTurf's 3DXtreme synthetic turf system. The product blends Horseshoe-shaped fibers for structural resiliency with XP technology slit film fibers for resistance to wear. It also features AstroTurf's patented RootZone® technology, a system of crimped fibers that holds sand and rubber infill in place, radically reducing rubber splash and migration. The result is a natural-looking playing surface that has garnered rave reviews for its performance, aesthetics, player protection, and durability.
Sports Construction Management, a certified AstroTurf installer and distributor, will handle the resurfacing of both fields. They have extensive experience in the region working with private school installations. Removal of the old turf is scheduled for June 23rd, allowing for graduation ceremonies and early summer camps prior to construction. Completion is anticipated for August 5th, before the start of the fall sports season. Lebrun's Coaches Field will be lined for soccer and lacrosse, while J. Duncan Smith '73 Field will have accommodations for football and lacrosse.
"Boys' Latin is continuously striving to provide our students with the best possible resources in all endeavors, sports included," said Michael Thomas, Director of Athletics. "We are confident in our selection of AstroTurf for the new playing surfaces on Smith Field and Coaches Field. The technology behind their products is impressive, and the emphasis on player protection and safety was paramount in our decision-making process."
The AstroTurf 3D playing surface exemplifies an emerging concept in the artificial turf industry known as 'DIG' (Density/Infill/Gauge). Turf with high fiber Density, lightweight Infill, and narrow Gauge - or low DIG - tend to perform more like natural grass and allow cleats to penetrate and release properly. The patented RootZone system which maintains consistent infill disbursement throughout the breadth of the playing surface only enhances this field performance. Other turf systems with heavy infill, less fiber and wider rows – or high DIG - can trap cleats that dig in, potentially resulting in a higher frequency of lower leg injuries. A Michigan State study funded by NFL Charities exhibits the science behind AstroTurf's superiority in this regard. A link to that study, as well as a video illustration of the DIG principles upon which the AstroTurf 3D turf systems are built, can both be found on the company's website.
"AstroTurf is honored to be involved with such a prestigious institution like the Boys' Latin School," said Bryan Peeples, President of AstroTurf. "We congratulate the Lakers on an historic lacrosse season and look forward to seeing them play on their brand new AstroTurf fields, which are considered to be the finest synthetic playing surfaces in the world."
About Boys' Latin
The Boys' Latin School of Maryland was founded in 1844 and remains the oldest, independent, nonsectarian school for boys in the state and region. BL Lacrosse is perhaps the most historically significant high school lacrosse program in the country, with tremendous success both on the field and in developing NCAA Division I student-athletes. The Lakers capped off an undefeated 2014 campaign with a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association "A" division championship and were recognized as the number one team in the nation. It was the 10th MIAA title for Boys' Latin with six of those in the last 30 years; this marked the third time BL Lacrosse went undefeated and was recognized as consensus national champions, joining the 1997 and 2006 Laker squads.
