WALTHAM, Mass., March 31, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Boston Engineering today announced the appointment of Jose Vazquez to direct the company's Defense & Security practice. Mr. Vazquez previously held director-level positions at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Office of Naval Research (ONR), where his responsibilities included developing programs and products for first responders and military personnel.
"Jose joins Boston Engineering with an impressive track record of developing technologies that meet the unique requirements of federal defense and civilian agencies, as well as state and local first responders," said Mark Smithers, co-founder and chief technology officer (CTO) of Boston Engineering. "His homeland security and DoD experience will be instrumental in working closely with clients and end users to bring practical, innovative products to the field."
At the DHS Science and Technology Directorate (DHS S&T), Mr. Vazquez led the First Responder Technologies (R-Tech) group responsible for developing, testing, and fielding technology solutions for first responders. During his more than eight years at DHS S&T, Mr. Vazquez also started and led the Virtual USA program, which has improved how emergency management agencies across jurisdictions share information during catastrophic incidents. In 2014, Mr. Vazquez sponsored and led the requirements gathering efforts for the "Project Responder 4: 2014 National Technology Plan for Emergency Response to Catastrophic Incidents" report, which identified gaps in first responder technologies.
Mr. Vazquez served as the first director for ONR Global's Latin America office in Santiago, Chile. Additionally, he led the U.S. Navy's science advisor program and directed 25 science advisors, who liaison with science and technology organizations in government, academia, and industry. The science advisors also communicate U.S. military personnel needs and requirements to the ONR and the Naval Research Enterprise to help identify and prioritize U.S. Navy science and technology investments.
Additionally, Mr. Vazquez also served as the director of ONR's rapid-response TechSolutions program, which prototypes ideas submitted by sailors and Marines to improve U.S. Navy science and technology-related capabilities.
Mr. Vazquez is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and holds an M.S. in Applied Science from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif.
