Borrego Health Selects Mushroom Networks for Failsafe WAN Performance, Uptime, and Reliability
SD-WAN Innovator to Showcase the Broadband-Bonding Technology at ATA 2016 Booth #2540
MINNEAPOLIS, May 16, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Mushroom Networks, innovators in Broadband-Bonding™ and Software-Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN) platforms, today announced Borrego Health, a non-profit healthcare provider across Southern California, has selected Mushroom Networks' Truffle Broadband-Bonding SD-WAN platform to upgrade their legacy MPLS network with a Software-Defined Network (SDN) architecture. By doing so, Borrego Health boosted performance and reliability for mission-critical applications while simultaneously lowering costs and complexity for its IT staff by 70 percent.
"In addition to our VoIP and video collaboration applications, we needed better reliability and performance for our Electronic Health Systems (EHS) data," said Dave Baldwin, CIO of Borrego Health. "EHS is a fundamental cloud application for our clinics. Our EHS services can't go down. It literally can be a matter of life and death. As a result, we evaluated many different SD-WAN platforms in order to secure the most reliable solution available. After extensive evaluation, Mushroom Networks was the only one that met our needs."
Borrego Health is a Federally Qualified Health Center operating in San Diego, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. It offers compassionate, quality care to all. Patients have access to specialists in such fields as dermatology, mental health, pediatrics, podiatry, prenatal care, reproductive health and women's health. Borrego Health owns 24 clinics and will reach over 30 clinics in 2017.
Borrego Health selected Mushroom Networks' Truffle SD-WAN platform in order to upgrade its legacy MPLS network, delivered primarily over aging copper cabling, which was experiencing significant reliability issues, at speeds from 3mbps to 200mbps. Unlike other SD-WAN solutions, Truffle employs Mushroom's proprietary Broadband-Bonding technology that enables high-performance, high-bandwidth connectivity as well as sustained application-level performance. Broadband Bonding also enables Borrego's network to leverage secondary and tertiary circuits in order to deliver all available bandwidth from all circuits simultaneously, with an always-on, auto-failover design that prioritizes and optimizes mission-critical applications automatically. Using Truffle, Mushroom Networks provided Borrego Health with a completely new SDN architecture, as well as the following benefits:
- Boost in WAN Performance:
Truffle appliances were used to bond two or three WAN circuits per site from disparate carriers simultaneously. By doing so, Borrego could increase network capacity 400 percent while increasing cost only 25 percent. The overall WAN metrics improved both for mission critical applications such as Citrix, hosted VOIP, EHS, and telehealth as well as best effort traffic. As an example, the VPN connecting a branch office to the HQ office now has the full bonded speed of the broadband lines, as opposed to an individual broadband line speed. Bonded circuits per site range from 23mbps to 400mbps of aggregate bandwidth. - Boost in WAN Reliability:
Truffle provided self-healing WAN and dynamic fail-over capabilities for Borrego Health's network. As a result, on-going Internet sessions are now shielded from any WAN outages or performance fluctuations, as long as at least one of the WAN connections stays up. - Reduced WAN Cost:
Compared to a single MPLS based WAN network, the cost savings achieved by Borrego were very significant, reaching up to 70 percent cost savings, due to combining MPLS, Internet and Ethernet networks into one network seamlessly, reducing circuit and downtime costs and greatly simplifying management. - Reduced Emergency Calls & Related Cost:
Implementing Truffle significantly reduced emergency calls for IT problem tickets as most WAN related outages and emergencies are now shielded from the users and can now be addressed after hours in scheduled maintenance windows. - Specialized SD-WAN tunnels:
Truffle's SD-WAN Orchestration meant specialized tunnels could be fitted to Borrego's specific application requirements. One example was the use of Mushroom's VOIP Armor. Borrego has a Cloud PBX at its 1 Wilshire data center in LA serving 1000 users. The WAN connects the PBX to all users at all the clinics. VOIP Armor tunnels shield the VOIP/SIP sessions between users and the PBX against any network fluctuations or outages, delivering high MOS scores and toll quality calls.
Mushroom Networks will be demonstrating Borrego Health's solution, as well as its entire portfolio of SD-WAN solutions with Broadband-Bonding technology, in booth #2540 at this year's ATA 2016 telehealth conference and tradeshow, taking place in Minneapolis, MN this May 14-17.
