ROUND ROCK, Texas, March 7, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Dell Boomi™ (Boomi) the leading provider of cloud integration and workflow automation software to build The Connected Business, today announced that its cloud-based integration platform has enabled Easterseals Bay Area (ESBA), an organization that is leading the way to ensure individuals and families affected by disabilities can live, learn, work and play to their full potential, to transform itself from a traditional regional affiliate of the Chicago-based Easterseals organization into a state-of-the-art digital healthcare services organization and a behavioral health provider that's now working with thousands of care-providers and patients.
In 2012, California's new Autism Insurance Law (SB 946) went into effect and required healthcare insurers to cover behavioral health treatment for individuals with autism or other pervasive developmental disorders. As a result, a major U.S. healthcare maintenance organization (HMO) contracted with ESBA to help provide behavioral healthcare services to youth and their families in the Bay Area.
To effectively manage these services, ESBA had to build a fully secure digital information system across its groups of providers, patients and funders. Because the network would be handling clinical as well as business operations data, it would need to be compliant with stringent requirements of the Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other regulations. It would need to be comprehensive, keeping close track of a patient's path from referral through discharge.
To guide the creation of this new digital infrastructure, ESBA brought in Robert Van Tuyl, a veteran technology start-up executive and a former Accenture consultant specializing in large-scale enterprise software implementations.
Van Tuyl identified integration as a key component to the project. He selected the Boomi integration platform for quickly integrating cloud and web-based applications, as well as for automating workflows involving ESBA's employees and partners. Boomi's low-code interface and ready-to-use connectors helped ESBA work rapidly, connecting critical applications and scaling IT infrastructure to support the organization's exponentially growing workload.
ESBA adopted Salesforce Health Cloud and integrated it with an Electronic Health Record (EHR) and revenue cycle management system from AthenaHealth. The ESBA IT team relied on Boomi to integrate both of these applications with NetSuite as well as with new mobile apps created for care-providers.
Before the integration project began, clinicians had been engaged in time-consuming, paper-based administrative tasks. Following the integration, they were able to enter data more seamlessly through integrated technology on both desktop and the new mobile app and have it routed electronically through Boomi to the correct system.
"The new mobile app has significantly simplified how our therapists track client information and greatly reduces our administrative overhead," Van Tuyl said. "That is just the kind of efficiency you need in a healthcare services network operating at this scale."
He notes that ESBA has become an agile, data-driven enterprise.
"Boomi was able to easily scale our network from a trickle of data to millions of transactions very quickly," Van Tuyl says. "It has improved the quality of data in our systems and the efficiency of our operations. Most importantly, it has improved the patient experience. We couldn't ask for more than that."
ESBA has experienced:
- Rapid integration of Salesforce Health Cloud, NetSuite, AthenaHealth EHR and revenue system, and custom mobile apps
- Integration of application protocols ranging from RESTful APIs to traditional EDI and HL7 protocols
- Growth of IT infrastructure to become a state-of-the-art digital healthcare information network and a behavioral health provider network now managing 7,000 practitioners and $180 million in billings
- Clearing of a significant backlog in claims payable within a short period of time
- Workflow automation to support patient care and billing
- Implementation of data privacy and security controls for HIPAA compliance
"Easterseals Bay Area recognizes that fulfilling their critical mission of providing care to thousands of patients requires not just a human touch but also state-of-the-art technology, including data integration and workflow automation," said Chris Port, COO at Dell Boomi. "We are pleased to deliver the low-code integration platform that enables Easterseals Bay Area to connect and scale their healthcare and business systems, helping them expand critical services to thousands of patients and their families."
