Book on Learning to Cook After Brain Injury Shoots to Amazon Bestseller List on First Day of Publication
Author Susana Stoica, Ph.D., who suffered two traumatic brain injuries in the same day, shares recipes designed for people like her.
DETROIT, July 30, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Cooking after Brain Injury: Easy Cooking for Recovery (Healing Alternatives Press) was written to help people who love good nutrition and cooking but have brain injuries that affect their ability to focus, taste what they cook, and follow directions. In other words, people just like its author, Susana Stoica, Ph.D., a healer who in 2000 suffered two traumatic brain injuries in a single day.
Stoica says, "Cooking was virtually impossible because I could not follow a recipe and remembering my old recipes was impossible. If I started to cook the simplest dish and somebody would talk to me, I would end up over-salting, skipping steps or forgetting the pot on the burner. I nearly burnt down the house twice because I forgot I was cooking and I went out shopping. In my effort to find workarounds for 'normal activities,' I ended up devising my own new way of cooking, which I refined again and again, till I got to what is contained in this book."
The newly released book is the first in a series of recipe books that will vary in complexity. It contains recipes for appetizers, salads, side dishes, soups and desserts written with the brain injured in mind as well as shopping lists and instructions on how to use the labels provided by the author as a way to avoid cooking mistakes. Cooks can find success and good eating with simple recipes for such go-to dishes as avocados with eggs, cream of mushroom soup, asparagus with garlic, and berries with whipped cream.
Stoica has a lifelong passion for understanding how the brain works. She has a Ph.D. in computer engineering with a thesis in designing computers with circuits that model the brain cells and she also worked in the field of expert systems which model the human thinking process.
In an interview, she can talk about:
- The type of problems people with brain injuries have that prevent them from being able to cook and how those problems can be mitigated
- Her meticulous process for testing the recipes and why she had to enlist the help of people without brain injuries
- How the recipes get around the problem of over-salting, over-spicing, or forgetting cooking steps
- Why her cookbook is so valuable for brain injury recovery at the physical, mental, and emotional levels
- How family and friends can help a brain injured person to cook again
