Bonobos Makes Being Well-Dressed Easy and Affordable with Opscode
Online Menswear Brand Deploys Opscode Hosted Chef™ to Automate Amazon Web Services Infrastructure, Improving Application Development Velocity and Ensuring Website Uptime
SEATTLE, July 15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Opscode®, the foundation for the coded business, today announced that Bonobos, the largest apparel brand ever built on the web, has automated its entire Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure with Opscode Hosted Chef™. Using Hosted Chef, Bonobos has automated everything from configuration management to application delivery, speeding development cycles and improving agility and resiliency for its e-commerce platform.
Bonobos offers better-fitting, high-quality menswear online and in a handful of e-commerce showrooms (called Guideshops) throughout the country. Leveraging AWS, Bonobos built a cloud-based infrastructure, providing nearly limitless compute capacity for growing its e-commerce platform. However, using the public cloud also created significant management challenges for the company's lean engineering staff. Using Hosted Chef and its Knife EC2 command-line plug-in for AWS, Bonobos' engineering team can easily manage more than 150 cloud servers and ensure 100 percent uptime for its website operations.
"Hosted Chef just works. It's more reliable, predictable, and powerful than any other automation platform I've worked with before," said Jeff Hart, Senior Director of Engineering and Systems Infrastructure, Bonobos. "Plus, because it's hosted, I never have to worry about managing it myself. I just enter some code and whatever I need to do is done right, every time."
"If you're not wearing Bonobos pants, you need to be. I wear mine all the time," said Adam Jacob, Chief Customer Officer, Opscode. "Bonobos' e-commerce platform is top-notch and with Hosted Chef handling configuration and app deployments, they can be sure it works smoothly, every day."
Bonobos combined Hosted Chef and Jenkins CI to create a 'one button' application delivery pipeline that makes its e-commerce platform more resilient and agile to spikes in site traffic. Using Hosted Chef to orchestrate application updates with Jenkins as the delivery mechanism, Bonobos developers can create new innovations more quickly with less risk of human error. In addition, Chef Community cookbooks for Java and Nginx provide rock-solid code for executing configuration and development tasks in minutes, further improving efficiency.
