SAN CARLOS, Calif., May 18, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation (ALCF) and OncLive®, a leading digital provider of resources and information to oncology professionals, announce their first research grant collaboration to improve lung cancer patient treatment and outcomes. In the spirit of the show "Shark Tank," the ALCF-OncLive Lung Grant Tank is designed to provide selected young investigators a grant over a one-year period. Semifinalists will receive mentorship from top cancer research opinion leaders prior to selection to help them with their presentation.
The Lung Grant Tank concept asks entrepreneurs to present and defend their ideas to a panel of subject experts. Ten semifinalist applicants will then be chosen and asked to defend their grant proposals, including the funding they need, in person in front of the ALCF-OncLive Lung Grant Tank Panel. The application submission deadline is June 21, 2016. Winners will be announced at the PER® 17th International Lung Cancer Congress meeting in Huntington Beach August 4-6, 2016.
Topic areas for submissions are:
- Improve patient treatment/outcomes
- Identify a new and innovative approach to addressing current gaps
- Advance the understanding of treating lung cancer in clinical practice
- Improve patient care/outcomes
- Address patient education and/or adherence
- Improve healthcare provider education
- Improve healthcare provider and patient dialog and/or shared decision making
- Address misperceptions pertaining to treating or having lung cancer
"This is a great way to get fresh new approaches to how we treat lung cancer. ALCF and OncLive's Lung Grant Tank encourages young investigators to think differently. It also is an opportunity for them to gain mentorship and collaborate with others in the cancer research community," said Bonnie J. Addario, 10-year lung cancer survivor and ALCF founder. "Patients and health care providers are all served when we work together. Creative solutions like this drive understanding, education and outcomes."
ALCF and OncLive will accept submissions for the grant from M.D.s, DOs, Pharm Ds, Ph.D.s, and other qualified HCPs. All submitters must be eligible to conduct research.
Mentors will be assigned and then selections of grant finalists and mentor assignments will occur by July 20. The expert mentors will work with semifinalists to present to the Lung Grant Tank selection panel on August 3.
Donna Short, Executive Vice President of Oncology Professional Relations for Michael J. Hennessy and Associates, parent company of OncLive, brought the project to ALCF.
"Grant Tank is an exciting way to collaborate with ALCF by encouraging young investigators," said Short. "Along with guidance from Dr. Leora Horn, Clinical Director of the Thoracic Oncology program at Vanderbilt, we see the value that investigators gain from being mentored by a top tier thought leader in lung cancer. The mission of OncLive is to provide oncology professionals with the resources and information they need to provide the best patient care. We feel this is a great way to deepen and support that mission."
Grant submission requirements and details are on ALCF's website. Applicants must submit Lung Grant Tank proposals by June 27, 2016.
