Bobby Genovese's Miss Canada IV at Ontario's Lake of Bays Antique & Classic Boat and Car Show Sunday, August 17, 2014
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Aug. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The recently-restored Miss Canada IV, built by Greavette Boats in 1948 -1949 in Gravenhurst and powered by a Rolls-Royce V 12 Griffon engine, will be at the Lake of Bays Antique & Classic Boat and Car Show on Sunday, August 17, 2014.
Miss Canada IV was built for Harold & Lorna Wilson to challenge for the Harmsworth Trophy, emblematic of world supremacy in powerboat racing. Although the boat failed to win the trophy in 1949 and 1950, the Wilson Racing Team blazed the way for Jim and Gordon Thompson's Miss Supertest III, which won the trophy an unprecedented three consecutive times (1959-1961).
In the fall of 1950, the Wilsons attempted to set a World Water Speed record. Miss Canada IV easily surpassed the record on her first one-mile run, setting an unofficial record of 173 mph; on the return run, at an estimated 200mph, her gearbox failed and she drifted to a stop just short of the finish line and an assured world record. The Wilsons retired from racing after this attempt and sold their boat to the Thompsons. After retiring from the racing circuit in 1954, she disappeared for 20 years, eventually being rescued from the scrap heap by the Mistele family from Detroit. Bobby Genovese obtained her from the Town of Ingersoll in 2011 with the promise to restore the classic to her former glory.
Miss Canada IV went on to take top honors at the 34th Annual Antique and Classic Boat Show in Gravenhurst, Ontario on, July 5, 2014 winning the "Best of Show Restored" award. Of her appearance in Baysville, Genovese said, "It will be exciting to show her in front of such an enthusiastic and appreciative crowd."
"This boat is a piece of Canadian history and an important part of Mr. Genovese's growing vintage race boat and antique boat collection," said BG Vintage Racing Team Manager, Jamie Smith. Miss Canada III, Miss Miami V, Rambler, and Pistoff – a 1960, 970-horsepower Vic Carpenter custom runabout —are also among the growing collection.
