BNY Mellon Sponsors New Yorkers For Children's Vocational Conference for Youth in Foster Care
Unique conference to connect NYC youth with job training and employment opportunities
NEW YORK, July 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- BNY Mellon, the global leader in investment management and investment services, is supporting New Yorkers For Children (NYFC) as the sponsor of Capturing a Career 2013. Capturing a Career 2013, NYFC's annual Vocational Conference for youth in foster care, is being held on Thursday, July 25 at the NYU Global Center at 238 Thompson Street. This is BNY Mellon's third year as the sole corporate sponsor of the conference, which was launched by NYFC in 2010.
The all-day conference will give youth ages 15-21 the opportunity to learn the skills needed to get and keep a job and to connect with workforce development agencies in New York City. Youth will be able to participate in skills workshops, conduct mock job interviews and network with professionals from a variety of careers.
New Yorkers For Children works in partnership with the Administration for Children's Services (ACS) to improve the prospects of children supported by the child welfare system and to engage New Yorkers in that effort. With a focus on young people in foster care, NYFC supports programs that promote paths to stable adulthood through education and sustainable relationships with caring adults.
"The goal of our Vocational Conference is to help older youth in foster care explore the professional world and various employment opportunities available to them," said Susan Magazine, Executive Director of New Yorkers For Children. "Through a wide variety of interactive sessions, we help youth gain a greater understanding of how important it is to write a professional resume, set goals and participate in a successful job interview, and give them the opportunity to meet a number of New York City employers."
"A large majority of youth aging out of foster care have difficulty finding sustainable employment," said Daisey Holmes, managing director of corporate affairs at BNY Mellon. "This unique event will allow youth in foster care to network with our employees and brings them together with nonprofit and governmental agencies that can help them find meaningful jobs and put them on the path to self-sufficiency."
Founded in 1996 by Nicholas Scoppetta, former Commissioner of the Administration for Children's Services, NYFC supports the child welfare community as a whole, as well as those programs that focus on the individual needs of young people in foster care. Each year, NYFC touches the lives of close to 1,000 youth in care through signature programming and continues to further its mission through organizational capacity building to create more effective systems to better serve this population of at-risk youth.
