In its daily report, BMR wrote: "While it is a true statement that China controls 95% of the market at present, it is different from China controlling 95% of the available supply, which it does not. It is currently the cheapest producer, however, hence its strong position.
Many of the rare-earth metals are actually more abundant than gold or copper. The difficulty with these elements is extracting them in an economical manner. There tends not to be a large deposit of one element over another; instead, many of them appear in the same vein and a mining company has to separate out the element that is in demand from the ones that aren't and then figure out what to do with the other stuff. It is part of what makes producing these elements costly."
BMR looked at the following topics, among others:
-- Why have rare earth metal stocks been so hot lately? Which company looks like it holds more promise, Molycorp or Rare Element Resources?
-- Does it look like a recovery in titanium is coming soon? Which titanium stock does BMR like best and why?
-- Why has molybdenum become another popular commodity? What industry is it tied to? Which molybdenum stock does BMR prefer, Thomson Creek or General Moly?
