BMCC Hosts Its First Speed Interviewing Fair
Because You Never Know, When You're Being Interviewed
NEW YORK, May 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), will host its first Speed Interviewing Fair on Monday, May 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. in Richard Harris Terrace at the college's main campus, 199 Chambers Street in Tribeca. Hosted by BMCC's Center for Career Development, the Fair will present over 20 employers, who will conduct brief one-on-one interviews with students and provide constructive feedback. Students will rotate among the tables, answering classic job interview questions such as "tell me about yourself," and have less than five minutes to make a lasting impression on an employer. In the process, students experience first-hand, a variety of employer interview styles and incorporating what they learn, into their interview skill set.
"Many people don't realize, an interview can happen at any time or anywhere," said BMCC President Antonio Perez. "Given these economic times, we use a wide array of tools to prepare our students to stand out in a competitive market. Sometimes for our students, getting a foot in the door of a prospective employer can hinge on something as seemingly small as that unexpected opportunity to connect and communicate some key facet of their skills. That's what 'Speed Interviewing' is all about."
Participating employers for the Speed Interview Fair include the NYC Board of Elections, Services for the Underserved, City Year, The Workforce One Career Center, and Sunglasses Hut.
The Center for Career Development prepared students for this event and on an ongoing basis, helps students clarify their career goals, research occupations that match their interests and skills, write a resume, develop an electronic portfolio and practice interviewing skills.
The Center also provides students with access to a BMCC-created bank of over 400 employers, and sponsors Career Fairs, the most recent of which was held in April 2012, was attended by over 600 students and alumni, and featured over 100 employers.
Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) of the City University of New York (CUNY) enrolls over 24,000 degree-seeking and 10,000 Continuing Ed. students a year, awarding Associate Degrees in 31 fields.
