"Extending Android with the Accessory Development Kit"
February 10, 2015
7:30am - 9am
Android is the predominant operation system in the mobile marketplace today. However, Android is also being deployed in several embedded applications and as a controller for communications and industrial equipment. Android has a number of supported sensor suites. But, what if you need to provide a motor controller or hazardous gas sensor? You could rebuild the Android sources and try to extend the Android platform by writing device drivers, hardware abstraction layers, etc. or you could plug in a real-time capable extension and offload the control signals to an Android Accessory. In this talk, we will discuss the Android Accessory mechanism and how to extend Android's capabilities without weeks of work and extensive knowledge of the Android source tree.
The speaker is Mike Anderson, the CTO and Chief Scientist for The PTR Group, Inc. With over 37 years in the embedded and real-time computing industry, Anderson works with a number of embedded operating system offerings. His focus over the past decade is primarily embedded Linux and Android on CPU architectures such as ARM, MIPS, PPC and the x86. Current projects include the deployment of SEAndroid on phones as well as Android bring up and its use in non-phone applications. As an instructor and consultant, Mike is a regular speaker at the Embedded Systems Conference as well as many other Android and Linux-oriented conferences around the world.
