Blue Cross Foundation Launches "Public Libraries for Health"
New program supports health-related programs through Minnesota's libraries
EAGAN, Minn., June 20, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation is accepting proposals for a new program that is designed to engage public libraries in improving the health of residents in low-income communities. The Foundation will fund up to four grants of up to $50,000 each. Proposals are due by noon on July 20, 2012.
"Public libraries are trusted institutions with strong community ties," said Stacey Millett, senior program officer. "They are in a unique position to help communities achieve health equity in effective and creative ways."
The program is part of a larger health equity initiative launched in 2011 that seeks to ensure that all Minnesotans have an equal opportunity to live a healthy life regardless of income, education, race and other socioeconomic factors that affect health.
Interested organizations must meet the legal definition of a Minnesota-based public library or Minnesota-based public library service as defined in Minnesota state statutes. The Foundation will strive for geographic reach around the state with the four grants in communities with a significant population of low-income households. Strong consideration will be given to public library applicants working with a local community partner.
