Blu Homes to Build First Home on Shelter Island
The Baker family turns to Blu Homes to build a dream home that can weather future storms
SHELTER ISLAND, N.Y., Dec. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Looking to build a new home that would gracefully transition into a full-time, eco-friendly residence, Warren and Sally Baker turned to Blu® Homes, Inc. ("Blu"), the leading builder of precision-engineered, green prefab homes. The Bakers will build a one-story, green home with Blu Homes that is strong enough to weather storms and hurricanes that are common to coastal regions. The Baker home will be Blu Homes' first project built on Shelter Island.

"When we were searching for hurricane-proof home designs, there were three builders that came up, including Blu Homes. Blu Homes' designs were very modern with a lot of glass and we loved that," explained homeowner Sally Baker, whose family has owned a Norman Jaffe-designed home on her family's Shelter Island property for 43 years. "Living in this home inspired us to go with Blu Homes because of their windows and solid construction. Blu's designs are reminiscent of Norman Jaffe's designs—a leading architect on Long Island who passed away—with the open living plan and expanses of glass."
Channeling the style of their original home, the Bakers' new home will feature a combination of Blu's Balance and Origin models with a Breezespace to connect the two models. The new home will incorporate many of the same elements as their previous home, including natural wood and expansive glass windows. The home will also include a workshop, sculpture studio, and pool, among other signature touches that reflect the Bakers' personal interests. However, the one-story living plan, as well as the low maintenance and upkeep requirements of a Blu home, will make the Bakers' new home ideal for the coming years.
"We've lived in a sculpture for 43 years, and it's time to make a change," Warren Baker noted, regarding the Norman Jaffe-designed home. "It was originally Sally's folks' home, and we've enjoyed it all these years, but now we have our own opportunity to design and build quickly on our two acres across the street. Blu Homes has allowed us to do this."
Blu Homes provides homebuyers with a faster, more streamlined way to rebuild, delivered at one fixed price. Built by skilled craftspeople in its 250,000 square-foot factory in Vallejo, CA using advanced building technology, Blu homes are folded for quick and cost-effective transportation and setting on site. While experts say it could take over a decade to completely rebuild after Sandy, once delivered, Blu homes are installed on-site in as little as one day and completed in typically four to six weeks.
"Blu Homes is committed to building structures that are strong enough to weather the extreme storms and hurricanes which sadly seem to be the new normal," explained Bill Haney, Blu Homes founder and CEO. "Blu's state-of-the-art building science allows us to help disaster victims rebuild their lives more quickly. Our homes are built to last for generations with the highest quality and most enduring strength."
With over 385,000 homes damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey, Blu Homes has made a commitment to contribute to the recovery by offering discounts to homeowners affected by the storm.
