The authors of these articles are lawyers from the nation's largest law firms. The awards recognize work published in 2011.

The Burton Awards for Legal Achievement recognize the best in legal writing at the nation's 1,000 largest and most prestigious law firms. Nominations are submitted by managing partners at these firms, and submissions are judged by an Academic Board comprised of distinguished legal scholars from the nation's courts and top law schools.

The submissions were judged this year by an Academic Board led by Virginia Wise, a renowned teacher at Harvard Law School; Anne E. Kringel, a widely recognized expert in legal writing and senior lecturer in law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School; Grace Tonner, a prominent dean from the University of California Law School at Irvine; Judge Ed Forstenzer, a distinguished judge from California's Superior Court (retired); and William Ryan, a direct descendant of Noah Webster and former Chair of the White House Plain Language Committee.
The 13th annual Burton Awards event will be held at the Library of Congress on June 11, 2012.
