Complimentary Event Features Industry Leaders, Government Representatives and Members of Academia Discussing Challenges and Opportunities for Nuclear Energy in New England
BOSTON, June 10, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bloomberg BNA today announced that it will be hosting A Chain Reaction: The Role of Nuclear Energy in New England's Energy Mix, a morning conversation highlighting the value of nuclear energy in New England. The second in a series of nationwide events underwritten by Nuclear Matters, the discussion is taking place Wednesday, June 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Westin Boston Copley Place. The event will be live-tweeted using the hashtag #NuclearGoingForward and complimentary registration is available here.
The proceedings will kick off with a conversation with John Kotek, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office of Nuclear Energy at the Department of Energy. The Office is responsible for conducting research on current and future nuclear energy systems, maintaining the government's nuclear energy research infrastructure, establishing a path forward for the nation's spent nuclear fuel as well as a host of other national priorities.
"The diverse roster of industry and policy experts we have assembled will frame the role nuclear energy should play going forward in achieving New England's broad energy and environmental objectives," said Chris Gadomski, lead analyst, nuclear, at Bloomberg New Energy Finance and session moderator for the Boston event. "This event will address how to strike a balance between New England's strong commitment to the environment with the demands to supply cheaper energy."
"We are pleased to be partnering with Bloomberg to continue a dialogue about the benefits of nuclear energy and the need to preserve existing nuclear energy plants in New England and across the country," said former Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH), Nuclear Matters co-chair. "New England's nuclear energy plants bring significant benefits to the region, including reliable, carbon-free energy and jobs and economic growth. I look forward to continuing to raise awareness, in part through events like this, of the need to ensure that nuclear energy is properly valued as a reliable, affordable and carbon-free electricity resource that is essential to America's energy future and diverse fuel mix."
Topics being discussed at the event include:
- how nuclear fits into the region's clean energy initiatives
- the industry's challenges and recent history in the region and competing market forces
- new technologies that may enhance the safety, economic competitiveness and power output of New England's existing fleet
- next generation nuclear technologies, their expected timeline and how they will impact the current generation of operating reactors
- the impact of pending legislation in Massachusetts on the industry
In addition to Mr. Kotek, speakers at the Boston event include:
