Attorney Richard Renkin established the Blood Cancer Awareness Scholarship to help ease the financial burden of law school for a student who has been affected by leukemia, lymphoma, or other forms of blood cancer. Richard – himself a lymphoma survivor – is passionate about spreading awareness of the realities of living with curable blood cancers. His goal with the Scholarship is to help change the public perception that blood cancer patients' lives end with their diagnoses.
By encouraging students to share their stories and show that they are able to thrive in spite of their diseases, Richard hopes more people will be inspired to understand curable blood cancers and help contribute to the research that can allow patients like Danielle Taylor to thrive.
A graduate of Texas Christian University, Danielle enrolled at Texas A&M University School of Law in 2014. She plans on graduating with her law degree in 2017. The Law Office of Renkin & Associates chose Danielle as the 2015 Blood Cancer Awareness Scholarship based upon her nearly life-long struggle with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia and Peritoneal Mesothelioma. Despite receiving her first diagnosis at the age of seven, Danielle has not only enrolled in law school, but in 2014 she completed the endurance racing Triple Crown with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training. This consists of a "century" bicycle ride (100 miles), one half-marathon, and a triathlon.
Danielle's energy, commitment, and perseverance should serve as inspiration for individuals who are living with curable blood cancers or interested in learning what they can do to help fight these life-changing diseases. Ms. Taylor shared:
"Being awarded this scholarship will help towards covering law school expenses in a big way. Having a very personal connection to the mission of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society makes receiving this scholarship special. With medical expenses and the expense of traveling to and from treatment every week, this scholarship will help ease some of the financial burden of law school tuition and expenses."
Despite being curable, lymphoma and other blood cancers still account for thousands of deaths every year. According to the National Cancer Institute, Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma alone has already claimed nearly 20,000 lives in 2015. With financial support from charitable organizations such as the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, researchers can continue to develop tests and treatments to more-readily identify blood cancers and stop them from spreading before it becomes too late. Richard Renkin is an ardent supporter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and encourages everyone to provide their support so that more people like Danielle can tell their stories to the world.
Law Office of Renkin & Associates plans to announce its 2016 Blood Cancer Awareness Scholarship later this year. You can monitor the firm's law school scholarship page on the website for updates and additional information.
