Black Duck Announces Ohloh Enhancements Providing New Visibility into Open Source Activities Affiliated With Organizations, Expanded Code Search Capabilities
New Analytics and Features Track Contributions from both Corporate and Non-Profit Organizations; Ohloh Code Graduates from Beta Providing Unparalleled Access to World's Open Source Code
BURLINGTON, Mass., Oct. 25, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Black Duck Software today announced enhancements to Ohloh, the world's most comprehensive developer resource for evaluating and tracking open source projects, contributors and code. Organizations can now aggregate their open source contributions across many projects, providing new visibility into community growth and top contributors. In addition, Ohloh Code, the leading open source code search engine, has graduated from beta, providing fast access to the world's open source code base.

New Ohloh Organizations Feature
This new feature enables corporations, foundations, nonprofits, educational institutions and government entities to identify affiliated projects and begin aggregating key statistics about the code, contributions and people involved, including:
- Most active projects
- Most recent 12-month contributor and commit counts, plus year-over-year growth
- Top 10 contributors for the organization across all affiliated projects
- Total contributions to an organization by category, such as commercial, non-profit, government and education
Both companies supporting projects and OSS organizations such as the Eclipse Foundation and The Apache Software Foundation can now further leverage Ohloh to track their overall community and project growth, project statistics and activities.
"We're excited to see Black Duck continuing to invest in helping open source communities stay transparent and visible through public project metrics," said Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation. "The new Ohloh Organizations feature will enable all open source organizations to more transparently track and measure the growth of both the contributors and code bases across the many FLOSS projects. Having a common set of metrics for all organizations will be very helpful."
During the beta period for the Organizations feature, organizations wishing to use Ohloh's new statistical aggregation capabilities should request that their organization be added to Ohloh via Ohloh.net. Once added, organization managers can then use Ohloh to affiliate projects with their organization and immediately start compiling and reporting statistics. In the future, organization managers will be able to add new orgs through a self-service feature.
"While Black Duck has frequently reported on open source data trends based on our analysis, we are pleased to provide a simple, consistent capability that is available and visible to the entire open source community," said Jim Berets, Vice President of Product Management, Black Duck. "All types of organizations can now use Ohloh to aggregate all their open source projects for statistical insights into what's happening in their overall community. These insights can then be used to inform project and community initiatives for growing contributors, recognition, accelerating project innovation and additional organizational priorities."
Open Source Code Search Now Formally Available in Ohloh
Additional Ohloh updates include the complete migration of Black Duck's open source code search engine, Koders.com, into Ohloh Code. In beta since July, Ohloh Code now offers developers a free, syntax-aware code search engine with most of the active projects from Ohloh indexed for easy search from a simple browser interface or using Black Duck Code Search plugins available for Eclipse, Microsoft Visual Studio, Firefox and Google Chrome.
With the Koders transition complete and well over 11 billion lines of open source code indexed, Ohloh Code is the world's largest, most comprehensive free code search engine. Ohloh Code allows developers to search and filter based on class, method and interface definitions, unlike traditional text internet search engines which are not "code-knowledgeable" and often include non-code details and data in search results. Ohloh Code displays formatted code results with search-match highlighting, and allows developers to browse other related project code.
Ohloh Code includes:
- Syntax-aware code search for 43 languages, with special operators for searching specific class, method and interface definitions
- Ability to view information about the project that produced the code, helping developers determine the best code to fit their projects
- Stats on project team size, key contributors, languages used throughout the project, and more
Developers who want Ohloh Code to start indexing their project can simply add the project and source code location to Ohloh. Once added, Ohloh will immediately begin indexing and analyzing the project.
