B&L Associates and Index Engines Partner to Bring Efficiency to Backup and Archives
Combination of Technologies Streamlines Backup by Pruning Catalogs and Data while Delivering Access to Archived Content
NEEDHAM, Mass., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- B&L Associates, Inc., a leader in innovative data management solutions, today announced a joint development agreement with Index Engines, a leader in enterprise discovery solutions. This partnership enables users of B&L's Archived Data Manager® (ADM) to index and restore files using an Index Engines appliance. Useful for both decommissioned and production catalogs, B&L's ADM identifies inactive backup catalog data, and enables users to migrate that data to an ADM-managed catalog archive, reducing the window for production catalog backups by up to 90%. The combined technologies allow an organization to centrally locate and search catalog metadata by a number of search criteria. Once located, the data is ingested for extraction and recovery. As a result, backup speed and bandwidth utilization are dramatically improved. In addition backup tapes managed by ADM can also be searched, extracted and remediated using Index Engines' technology -- all without the need for the original backup software.
A Leaner, Greener Data Center
"Backup catalogs are bloated by inactive data that is usually only used for audits and compliancy," stated Michael Kramer, VP Sales and Marketing at B&L Associates. "Archived Data Manager with the Index Engines appliance allows clients to archive that data, significantly reduce backup time, and still remain completely compliant."
"What this means for today's data centers is an unheard-of level of efficiency," said Arun Taneja, consulting analyst and founder of the Taneja Group. "With the ability to centralize backup catalogs and decommission servers, energy costs are cut, valuable time and square footage in the data center are reclaimed, and the enterprise's overall impact on the environment is greatly reduced."
By eliminating this archival data from the daily backup process, this new solution will result in faster and more manageable backups, uncluttered by inactive archival data. ADM provides a consolidated, searchable view of inactive backup catalogs, allowing customers to migrate from legacy backup formats and to prune backup catalogs of inactive and archival information.
Preserving Legacy Value
In addition, this partnership adds value to legacy archives by enabling efficient search and data retention policies.
Together, B&L and Index Engines deliver a total solution that enables customers to cost effectively manage and maintain legacy backup data assets. This streamlined approach eliminates the burdensome operating costs and support fees that would otherwise be required to maintain legacy backup infrastructure. In addition, ADM customers can now more easily respond to eDiscovery requests and to remediate backup tapes based upon corporate policies.
"Combining these two technologies was a natural fit," said Jim McGann, VP of Information Discovery for Index Engines. "Both products add value on their own, but together they bring increased -- and welcomed -- efficiencies to the backup space."
