Bivins Gallery to Host Solo Exhibition Featuring Distinguished Artist Robert Hudson: Feb 18 - Mar. 25, 2017
DALLAS, Feb. 17, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Opening reception with artist in attendance will be held Saturday, Feb. 18, 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the new gallery located in Uptown's iconic Crescent at 300 Crescent Court.
Karen and Michael Bivins are pleased to announce Robert Hudson: Between the Lines, a solo exhibition to be held at the new Bivins Gallery in the Crescent. The exhibition runs from Feb. 18 through Mar. 25, 2017, and will showcase works by acclaimed West Coast artist Robert Hudson. An opening reception with the artist in attendance will be held at the gallery on Saturday, Feb. 18, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Hudson will also be available by appointment for media interviews and photographs at the gallery on Friday, Feb. 17. Complimentary valet parking will be provided.
In Robert Hudson: Between the Lines, arts patrons, collectors, and gallery guests will enjoy works from Hudson's large body of paintings, drawings, and sculptures. A primary force in the West Coast assemblage movement, Hudson's 50+ year career continues to evolve with results that are characterized by a riotously visual approach. The careful geometry of his forms is often painted over as he skillfully manipulates the viewer's perceptual experiences.
Robert Hudson's formally and spatially complex sculptures highlight his position as the progenitor of the current tendency toward sampled, hybrid art pulled together from disparate sources. A playful approach to his often densely composed, complex and multi-layered works allows his output to maintain a certain levity even as the pieces prompt viewers to question their experiences of art.
Robert Hudson was a recent recipient of the Lee Krasner Lifetime Achievement Award, and his works can be found in the permanent collections of the de Young Museum in San Francisco, the Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum . . . and that's just the short list. "Robert Hudson is an international treasure of the art world," Karen and Michael Bivins attest. "His work embraces rich colors with an infinite range of materials and objects that surround us in everyday life. The reward is visual, sensual, and intellectual."
Recently completed, the new Bivins Gallery officially opened to the public in late January 2017. In honor of the expansive and colorful new space and to celebrate the new venture of Karen and Michael Bivins, the couple assembled an ambitious group exhibition – 21 to Watch – showcasing works by 21 of the artists represented by the gallery. An opening reception to launch the exhibition was a success by any measure, with several hundred collectors, celebrities, arts patrons, and civic and community leaders, as well as numerous artists, in attendance. Guests enjoyed champagnes, wines and gourmet delights courtesy of the Hotel Crescent Court, along with special dance performances throughout the evening by the Bruce Wood Dance Project.

Bivins Gallery will collaborate with other galleries and curators from around the world, bringing key educational programs, exclusive artists' lectures, and relevant documentaries and films to Dallas.
The new Bivins Gallery space, with its 16-foot ceilings, is bright with light and bold with color. An exclusive viewing room was designed for appointments with art patrons, designers, architects, collectors, and artists.
The Crescent was chosen for the gallery's new home because of its location in Uptown and proximity to the Dallas Arts District. The Crescent's history and abundance of amenities, including enhanced pedestrian traffic, will serve the gallery well.
