The Commission on Youth Voting and Civic Knowledge is a distinguished group of bipartisan scholars convened by CIRCLE to investigate exclusive data collected during and after the 2012 elections on issues such as civic knowledge, voting behavior and the educational experiences of Americans ages 25 and under – a crucial constituency in electoral politics. The report is based, in part, on data from more than 6,000 young adults and 720 high school civics or government teachers. New findings will be disclosed concerning, for example, the degree of parental pushback when political topics arise in social studies classrooms.
The report addresses a wide range of topics, including the effect of voter ID and similar laws on young voters and whether young voters are a potential solution to partisan gridlock in Washington.
Speakers include Trey Grayson, former KY Secretary of State, Director of the Harvard Institute of Politics, member of the Presidential Commission on Election Administration and member of the Commission on Youth Voting and Civic Knowledge; Amanda Terkel, Senior Political Reporter and Politics Managing Editor of the Huffington Post, and Robert "Biko" Baker, Executive Director of the League of Young Voters. CIRCLE Director Peter Levine and Deputy Director Kei Kawashima-Ginsberg will present an overview of the report.
This National Press Club Newsmakers news conference is scheduled for 10:00AM, Wednesday, October 9, 2013 in the Club's Bloomberg Room on the 13th Floor of the National Press Building, 529 14th St, NW, Washington, DC, 20045.
